Lithuanian energy system

The main function of Litgrid AB as Transmission System Operator is to ensure an efficient and reliable operation of the Lithuanian power system. The company maintains and develops the transmisssion system, ensures electricity transmission to Lithuanian electricity distribution companies, co-ordinates the operation of Lithuania power plants and organizes trade in the power industry.

Litgrid turtas AB owns 226 transformer substations and switchyards, more than 6,000 kilometres of 330 kV and 110 kV electric lines, the Kaunas Hydro Power Plant and the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant. Both power plants are the main tools for ensuring capacity balance and regulation of systems.

The company-controlled transmission system is interconnected by four electric lines with Latvia, five with Belarus and three with Russia (the Kaliningrad Region).

Today, Litgrid AB is one of the constituent parts of the simultanously operating power systems of the Baltic States, Belarus and Russia, managing the flows of the most important type of energy in industry and households – electricity.
